Codex CLI adds Vim mode, goals on by default, codex doctor and conversation search
OpenAI Codex CLI added modal Vim editing, on-by-default goals and new diagnostics in May 2026. Seven releases shipped, from rust-v0.129.0 to rust-v0.135.0. The TUI composer gained Vim editing with /vim (text objects arrived later in the month), plus a redesigned resume/fork picker, raw scrollback mode, /ide context injection and a workspace-aware /diff. Goals became enabled by default in rust-v0.133.0, and goal continuations now stop at usage limits instead of looping.
Other changes: codex doctor for support diagnostics, search across local conversation history, and --profile as the primary profile selector. codex remote-control was added for headless, remotely controllable app-servers. MCP setup gained per-server environment targeting and OAuth options for streamable HTTP servers, and read-only MCP tools marked readOnlyHint can run concurrently. The Python SDK gained authentication flows and Sandbox presets. Remaining fixes covered tmux, Zellij, macOS and Windows terminal behavior and Windows sandbox hardening.
