AI Coding Tools Digest: Week 38, 2026 (Sep 14–20)

⚡ TL;DR

  • OpenAI Codex CLI ships voice conversations with live transcripts — the biggest UX leap in AI coding tools this month
  • Grok Build memory is out of beta, and Claude Code auto mode now defaults to server-side processing (no extra charges for most users)

  • 🚀 This Week's Releases

    Claude Code — 8 releases (v2.1.271–v2.1.278)

Busy week. The headliners: v2.1.278 flips auto mode to server-side processing by default — most users won't see extra charges, and you now get actual visibility into what auto mode is doing. v2.1.277 adds AGENTS.md fallback support when CLAUDE.md isn't present, plus fixes for hanging sessions and proxy issues that have been annoying people for weeks.

    Antigravity CLI — 5 releases (v1.2.3–v1.2.7)

Fastest-moving CLI this week. v1.2.7 adds LaTeX and Mermaid diagram rendering directly in your terminal (finally). v1.2.6 is the wild one — full remote control of your terminal from another device, plus no more 5-minute timeout on headless runs.

    OpenAI Codex CLI — 2 releases (rust-v0.155.0–v0.155.1)

v0.155.0 is the highlight of the week (see below). v0.155.1 is a quick hotfix — new local TUI sessions were incorrectly enabling reasoning summaries and causing provider rejections. Patch it fast if you're on .0.

    GitHub Copilot CLI — 2 releases (v1.0.85–v1.0.86)

v1.0.85 brings Vim mode to everyone (not just power users) plus /settings and /config commands for deeper customization. v1.0.86 fixes the annoying bug where custom instructions vanished on session reload.

    Grok Build — 3 releases (v1.0.32–v1.0.34)

v1.0.34 is the one to grab — memory is officially out of beta. Context now persists across conversations. Also fixes a macOS paste bug where images attached the wrong file (classic).

    Devin Desktop — 2 releases (v3.10.27–v3.10.31)

v3.10.31 makes recent session switching instant for your last 10 sessions. v3.10.27 adds drag-and-drop into the composer and smoother SSH reconnection after restarts.

    Kiro CLI — 1 release (v2.22.0)

Distraction-free fullscreen chat mode and a cleaner dashboard. Smaller drop but solid QoL improvement for long coding sessions.

    Gemini CLI — 1 release (v0.60.0)

Security-focused release. Tighter OAuth handling, better connection validation, and guardrails on extension system access. Not flashy, but important.

    🔍 Highlight Deep Dive

OpenAI Codex CLI rust-v0.155.0 ships voice conversations with live transcripts and real-time reasoning summaries — and this is a bigger deal than it sounds. You're not just dictating commands; you're watching the model's reasoning stream alongside your spoken input in real time. Combined with better session recovery and cross-platform credential handling, this release repositions Codex CLI from a power-user terminal toy into something that could genuinely fit into daily dev workflows. The quick hotfix in v0.155.1 suggests the rollout was a little rushed, but the core feature works. Keep an eye on this one.
